Orchid Events - Keiki Club for Beginners
The Keiki Club is for our beginning orchid growers. We begin with a short presentation on a timely orchid culture topic and then it’s a free for all to discuss any and thoughts or questions you have about growing orchids. Join us, visitors and guests are always welcome!

January 27 Keiki Club - Meet Your Mentor

Our mentoring program pairs experienced growers, acting as mentors, to new growers and growers new to St. Augustine. We will have a meet and greet at Sue and Terry’s to introduce you to your mentor and talk about your goals. Contact us if you would like to join the program as either a mentor or mentee.

February 17 Keiki Club - Winterizing Your Growing Area, Growing Area Tour

Susan and Doug grow their orchids on a screened porch and under a pergola in summer, setting up portable greenhouses in winter. Winter is always a challenge for those without a greenhouse. See how others grow their orchids meet the challenge of winter cold weather.

March 16 Keiki Club - Field Trip to Jacksonville Orchid Society Show

Have you ever gone to an Orchid Society show and seen all the beautiful exhibits or shopped from 10 orchid vendors side by side? We’ll be going up to the Jacksonville Orchid Society Show, if you want to car pool, email us.

April 28 Keiki Club - Picnic and Orchid Sale  

We’ll be enjoying barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs at our annual picnic. Bring a side dish to round out the meal and your liquid libation of choice, and join in the fun. Members are invited to bring any orchids, orchid companions or supplies you want to sell or swap. We may have a few plants to auction too! Please email or call (436-5618) Events Veep Dianne know if you plan on attending so we can be sure to have enough hamburgers and hot dogs for you.

May 26 Keiki Club - Repotting and Potting Mixes, Growing Area Tour

Sue will talk about how to decide which mix is best for your orchids, considering your growing area and watering habits. There may be some orchid keikis and divisions for you to mount and or pot up (one to a customer), bring a clay pot, just in case. To cover the cost of supplies, there will be a $5 charge. If you have more than 1 or 2 of your own plants that need repotting, please bring them to the Ace repotting clinic. The repotting crew is available to give you hands-on tips on repotting at the monthly Ace clinics.

June 22 Keiki Club - Field Trip to Krull Smith Orchids

Have you ever visited a commercial orchid nursery and seen the way they grow their plants? Krull Smith offers a wide variety of different types of orchids. We’ll be going over to Apopka for a visit. If you want to car pool or caravan, email us.

On summer vacation, come to the Ace repotting clinics on the first Saturday of the month if you have questions or orchids that need repotting.
September 22 Keiki Club - Fall Preparations, Growing Area Tour

Enjoy the cooler fall weather, and use this time to get your orchids ready for their winter rest. Get their winter home prepared, and then spend some quality time with your orchids removing spent sheaths and drenching the pots to eliminate the creepy crawlers. We will talk about the cold hardiness of different types of orchids so you can develop your plan for the winter months.

October 19 Keiki Club - Field Trip to Orchtoberfest at EFG

George and Paula Hausermann host an Orchtoberfest every year at their nursery where orchids, tropical plants and orchid supplies will be offered for sale. The Hausermann clan will be busy grilling brats and serving German potato salad and more, including German beer! We’ll be going to DeLand for a visit. If you want to car pool or caravan, email us.
